This month we spoke to Matt Kay, owner of Square Pixel Productions. Based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, the company provide video production services working with a wide range of clients including, Government, Health, Sport, Construction, Business and Leisure sectors.

Hi Matt! Tell us about your business
We are a video production company based in Hertfordshire that offer corporate videos, promotional videos, events and live streaming. We have a license to fly drone to capture aerial video.
What drove you to start the business?
I worked full time as a media producer and did some freelancing. As I was becoming more busy with freelancing, I was considering dropping a day at work and at the time they did redundancies. I therefore took the opportunity to leave and start the company.
What particular challenges did you have to overcome in setting up your business, and since then?
Learning about business and how everything works when I first started was a massive challenge. Covid has been a big challenge, I won’t get into that, it’s tough on everyone and I’m sure we all know the challenges we have faced there.

Have we helped you overcome any challenges, and if so, how?
I don’t think I could ever understand accounting and if I tried I wouldn’t be able to do my job. I moved house 18 months ago and the bank was asking all kinds of questions about the company finances which I didn’t have a clue about to be honest. I was able to send this in to you and you provided all that they wanted to know.
What do you have planned for your business in the future?
Improving video production for smaller companies. The ones that would really benefit, but can’t afford a custom video production. I plan to do this by streamlining the process and creating an ‘off the shelf’ style video where it’s a simple template that is followed, meaning pre production is already done. We would need to just visit the company, film the sections necessary and piece it together, meaning the process is much faster and therefore cheaper.
